History

Holy Redeemer

1884 Church

The Catholic faith community of Marshall began to take shape in the 1870s with the expansion of the railroad and under the strong influence of Archbishop John Ireland. With financial support from area Protestant businessmen, a wooden church, built in 1884, was expanded in 1890. The present classical, cruciform brick structure was completed in 1915. Holy Redeemer parish was incorporated October 14, 1890.

The parish has grown in the years since under the leadership of several notable pastors, including Fr. George Carlin and Fr. Rudolph A. Neudecker, who served the parish for a total of nearly 50 years. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet led the parish's educational system from 1900 to 1996, operating a small elementary school until the early 1950s when a modern elementary and high school opened. The school continues today serving grades K-8 with nearly 300 students. In 1968 Holy Redeemer Parish extended its mission to the student community of the local college when the Campus Religious Center was built in coordination with other faith communities in Marshall.
